Breakfast is one of my favorite meals to eat outside the home. It is often part of a relaxing morning with friends and family. However, it can be hard to find a restaurant that serves breakfast items that fit with a healthier plant-based focus. Portage Bay Cafe in Seattle, WA, has several items on their menu that work well for me. It is also a restaurant that has enough variety that it will satisfy almost everyone in your party.
I have been to Portage Bay Cafe several times in the past few months. They have three locations: University District, South Lake Union and Ballard, all in Seattle, WA. They serve both breakfast and lunch. Lunch options include some breakfast items and a variety of sandwiches and salads.
For breakfast, I have tried their potato dish chock full of local root vegetables. Delicious. From what I remember, it had more of a variety of vegetables than potato. This past week, at the Portage Bay in South Lake Union, I chose a buckwheat hot cereal with lightly sweetened hemp milk. This also garnered a trip to the toppings bar, but what I found there was disappointing. Thawed, frozen berries and out of season strawberries. However, I scored when I saw that sautéed greens are offered as an entrée side. Yahoo!! They came in a hearty serving size and I was thrilled.
Portage Bay Cafe serves a variety of gluten-free and vegan options. All I can add is to watch out for the sugar if you are being careful with it. They have a vegan, gluten-free pumpkin pancake with a pecan sauce, but I refrained. I think I will have to make some at home soon. Tomorrow? Yum.
